Why We Built Our Own Sensor Instead of Using an Off-the-Shelf Solution

A woman on a treadmill wearing the Muscle Puck patch on her upper back.

The Muscle Puck started as a posture-focused wearable. It's since grown into a broader muscle-intelligence platform for athletes, coaches, and performance teams, but posture is where we began, and it's still something we care about. This post reflects our early thinking on that problem.

The Muscle Puck by Longevity Quantified started as a custom-engineered solution for posture improvement, and we didn't settle for motion-only tracking. Here's how our intelligent dual-sensor system, featuring clinical-grade EMG muscle sensing, delivers the accurate, personalized muscle data needed to truly improve your posture.

The Unmet Need: Why Existing Sensors Fall Short

When we set out to build the ultimate tool to improve posture, we recognized a critical flaw in existing electronic wearables: they're built on a superficial understanding of the problem. Most posture gadgets rely solely on motion sensors (accelerometers or gyroscopes) to measure body orientation. While these sensors can detect a deviation in spinal alignment (a slouch), they suffer from two major drawbacks that lead to high user abandonment:

To truly deliver posture improvement, we knew we needed a device that could measure the physiological effort, not just the positional result.

The Custom-Engineered Solution: Dual-Sensor Fusion

To overcome the limitations of standard posture trackers, we developed a custom-engineered system based on intelligent dual-sensor fusion. We integrated two distinct data streams to create an accurate feedback loop:

Through sensor fusion, we achieve higher accuracy in posture classification than conventional motion-sensor-only devices.

Data-Driven Differentiation: Measuring Fatigue, Not Just Position

The power of integrating the EMG muscle sensor is that it directly addresses the core problem: a lack of muscular endurance. Our system shifts the narrative from passive correction to active re-education. Here's what our sensing system allows us to do that a standard motion tracker can't:

The Result: A Lasting Way to Improve Your Posture

This hardware design, a thin, ergonomic module connected to a specialized adhesive electrode patch with a three-zone configuration, gives us a complete solution: accurate monitoring, real-time haptic feedback, and structured training that promotes the gradual strengthening of posture-supporting muscles.

We custom-engineered our sensing system because the only way to actually improve your posture is to measure what matters: your muscles.

That EMG-first approach is still at the core of the Muscle Puck today, even as it's grown to cover a lot more than posture.
